Description
Ray Charles–Quincy Jones Narrated Demo Recording (1958–59)
This is one of the rarest artifacts held within The Vault Reserve: an original demo recording capturing a defining moment in music history — Ray Charles narrating directly to a young Quincy Jones, recorded in 1958–59.
The story behind this recording begins on the West Coast. After saving roughly $600 from live performances, Ray Charles relocated to Seattle, where he crossed paths with Quincy Jones and producer Bumps Blackwell, the mind behind Little Richard’s earliest hits. During this period, Ray assembled a tight trio — guitar, bass, and piano — that quickly caught the attention of Jack Lauderdale of Downbeat, and later Swingtime Records, after Lauderdale heard Ray’s pre-recorded version of “Baby Let Me Hold Your Hand.” This very demo reel, originally recorded for Quincy Jones around 1958–59, is the recording offered here — a rare live demo complete with Ray Charles’s own commentary directed to Quincy Jones.
